Does "Rightly Dividing" Really Matter?

Just how important is it that we understand how to "rightly divide" the word of God? Will it help us better understand the Scriptures? Will it help clear up any perceived contradictions? I think it's fairly important in that God gave us instructions to do so in 2 Timothy 2:15.
